It is the first object of a broader collection commissioned by Chroma Composites.&nbsp;UltraFunctionalism is a new design concept developed for Chroma Composite. Inspired by Italian Rationalist Architecture, where function and construction methods define form, rejecting any superfluous ornamentations. Each object follows a strict assembly logic, with every element essential to its structure. This echoes Enzo Mari’s pursuit of critical design, while pushing toward precision and refinement. Unlike Mari’s raw aesthetic, these pieces are defined by sharp detailing and high-end finishing. The project launches with a Consolle Prima, which serves as a manifesto. Through it, Chroma’s Composites material becomes both medium and message: strong, essential, and uncompromising. Space Milan.Contemporary Design Factory” is a theoretical, practical and performative exploration of the work of contemporary designers, who are no longer tied to industrial production, but whose multidisciplinary approach requires new forms of thinking, new production processes and new economic articulations. The contemporary reinterpretation of the factory concerns first and foremost production: we move from the production of serial objects made by a company to the creation of unique or limited series which combine design, art and craftsmanship. The project was born to investigate a paradigm shift: design is a discipline associated with the Industrial Revolution, but over the last few decades, it has begun to evolve radically embracing major social transformations of our time, becoming a domain capable of connecting different spheres of knowledge and languages, from the arts to the sciences and crafts. Today, we consider design as a privileged arena where divergent perspectives can meet. While, theoretically, it is very interesting to look at the transformation of design and investigate its potential in different spheres of society, on the practical side, we see that the work of the designer can be precarious, confusing and ever-changing. To address such broad and complex topics, “Contemporary Design Factory” transformed DOPO? into a place for both cognitive and material production. The research project began with a series of conversations between professionals working in various capacities in the world of design: designers, PR, gallery owners, curators, entrepreneurs and researchers. Some of the topics investigated during the conversations — the proper valorisation of working time, poetic possibilities in the distribution of products, and the conflict between research and consumption — were visuall translated by graphic designer Giulia Boccarossa with three flags. In the concluding part of the residency, Tellurico Design Studio produced a new series of objects, experimenting with shapes, finishes and typologies. With this design residency, Tellurico Design Studio raises a fundamental question: how to rethink the four steps in design theorised by the historian Renato De Fusco - design, production, sale and consumption — from a contemporary perspective? In a land where extreme heat reigns supreme icebergs will offer the public shelter and a commonplace. In the last two decades, our planet lost about 267 gigatonnes (Gt) of glacial mass each year resulting in an overall 21% rise in sea level. This affects the balance of our planet as we know it and it can be seen in the increase in storms, disrupted weather patterns, loss of natural habitats in certain animal groups, and much more. The increase in pollution due to human activities is the main cause of this and Tellurico Design Studio wanted to bring this to people’s attention through the iceberg in the desert. Inviting people to think about how their decisions and lifestyles affec our planet, and to consider alternative solutions like the different ways in which plastic can be repurposed. As can be noted, there is an oxymoron in the presence of icebergs in the desert, no less in the city. This oxymoron was the common thread used by Tellurico in the conceptualization of not only the title but also the selection of the materials. Because common knowledge holds that Ice needs temperatures below 0°C to remain intact, the possibility of having real icebergs in cities like Dubai is never feasible, but it is exactly this cognitive dissonance that Tellurico is using to attract people and spark curiosity. Tellurico takes recycled plastic material and transforms it into iceberg sculptures that stand as oxymorons invoking reflection and fascination. These sculptures are just the ‘’tip of the iceberg’’, for together they tell a story of awareness, sustainability, and sculptural design. The Icebergs are works of sculptural design. With the chosen materials, Tellurico has interpreted sculptures that boast a similar colour, shape, and texture to that of real icebergs. Besides simply being sculptures, the icebergs are also functional design as they have a hollow inside with seating available for those passing by to take a refreshing break. Filling the city with forms that are unique and foreign to the landscapes of the region. On a more social note, the iceberg sculptures are meant to sensitize and bring awareness to what is happening in our planet’s environment, especially the effects of our plastic use and consumption. The icebergs speak of the rising temperatures that are causing a rapid depletion of glacial ice which in turn increases the sea level. Thanks to the Icebergs Tellurico is recycling more than 500 kg of plastic produced by The Good Plastic Company and showing a framework on one of the many ways in which humans can reduce the impact we have on our environment. The project aimed to demonstrate the versatility and expressive potential of Polygood, a 100% recycled plastic material developed by The Good Plastic Company. The resulting installation, titled “Polygood Bar,” served as both a social hub and an exhibition space, exploring how sustainable materials can be transformed into functional, visually striking environments. The setup was produced locally by Danube Group and featured two distinct yet cohesive sections: an exhibition space and a talks area, both designed to highlight different applications of the Polygood panels. The project was realised through a network of collaborations that enhanced its quality and atmosphere. iGuzzini provided the Libera lighting system, creating a refined and adaptable illumination throughout the space, while Arper contributed upholstered seating that balanced comfort and elegance in the lounge area. Presented within the Isola Design exhibition, the Polygood Bar became a vivid demonstration of how recycled materials can define the aesthetics of contemporary design, merging sustainability, craftsmanship, and innovation in one cohesive experience. Opening to the public on the 26th of April, this special exhibition will feature over twenty works which blur the line between functional objects, furniture and sculpture, all with a keen focus on the possibilities of texture. Specially commissioned and existing pieces by Tellurico, the multidisciplinary design studio founded by Netherlands-based Italian designer Francesco Pace, will be on show alongside objects drawn from Spazio Leone’s collection. Until now, Spazio Leone’s focus has predominantly been on collectible classic European design, but always with one eye on contemporary and emerging designers too. Now, they’re realising a long-held ambition – to help platform and spotlight the work of the most exciting new designers. “Part of what drew me to historical pieces initially was the exceptional quality and skill in the design, something which can be rare in our current era,” says Spazio founder Gennaro Leone. “But there are incredibly talented designers coming through now too, and if we want our current period to become part of design history, then it’s important we celebrate their work, and help support them to grow.” This first show is borne out of a friendship with Tellurico’s Italian-born Francesco Pace, who studied in both Milan and Eindhoven and is now based in Eindhoven. Founded in 2017, Pace’s multidisciplinary design studio Tellurico has quickly established itself as a leading emerging name in design. Personal and social well-being has become the main priority for almost everyone. The Take Care! exhibition aims exactly at promoting design projects focused on tackling contemporary issues that cover both the social and individual spheres. The inequity in access to food resources, the fast deterioration of the environment, and the excessive production of waste finding a way of rebalancing themself are just a few examples of some of the most urgent topics of our time. The projects on display work towards raising awareness on those themes bringing up crucial questions and promoting both conceptual and practical solutions. The setup, designed by Tellurico Design Studio and commissioned by Isola Design, creates a bridge between indoors and outdoors. A conversation between the outside garden of Biblioteca degli Alberi and the inside exhibition space of Stecca3. The plants burst through the windows into the exhibition space and invade the inner space. The installation design is inspired by the way how native South American civilisations grow their food. In South America when colonists arrived from Europe, they thought they had found heaven, the promised land. One of the reasons they thought so was because by walking along the paths within the forest they were able to find all the food they needed along the way, accustomed as they were to growing their food by cutting down a piece of land and growing only one vegetable or fruit on that same land. Local South American tribes grew their food differently, in commune with nature, along the path they were walking in, in this way they did not have the need to carry food with them and they could take everything they needed from the forest. We similarly created the installation design, a patch along which the viewer can walk and find the design projects, food for their mind. All the plants used for the installation have been carefully selected together with OZ eventi, which works not only as an installation a specialised installation company, picking only seasonal plants from the Milanese countryside. Take Care!, is the very first event in the Isola Design District which highlights individual and collective wellness, stated in all its meanings. The project investigates the theme of “Grief” trying to create an environment which is at the same time, private and public. The loss of a loved one causes emptiness and fluctuations of emotions, a void like no other; there are no words that can describe it nor words to soothe the feeling of loss. The spatial choreography embodies different stages of grief, with each stage taking the viewer through different aspects of that journey, from absence to presence. The memories and the love you feel for your loved ones will keep them present. In this set-up design, the visitors move through the layers and become part of fluid non-linear memories. The stage becomes an interactive experience for both, viewers and designer where our body sensation and movement initiates a dialogue between past and present, memories and grieving. The translucent curtains create an uncanny space, where shadowy figures pass by on the borders of perception. When the light shines on the handmade hammered metal islands, the reflection on the curtains of this semi-private space, forms an atmosphere of fleeting memory. The altar-like space makes you feel like you are walking through a sacral space, where observance and silence become predominant. The installation, composed of three main sections (the central pieces, the peripherical videos and the soundscape), is a geological and social investigation into the Phlegraean Fields in the South of Italy The central pieces are inspired by Dante's geographical conception of the Entrance of Hell in the Divine Comedy. According to Dante, the world is divided into two distinct hemispheres, one of which is entirely formed by the emerged lands and the other completely covered by waters. Hell, created by God throwing Lucifer on earth, is referred to as a deep funnel-shaped cavity that opens under Jerusalem and reaches Earth's centre. Geographically, the Entrance of Hell seems to coincide in Italy with Averno's Lake, a volcanic basin in the Phlregrean Fields which was the entry to Hades. Each piece represents the craters that today compose the Averno Lake and their proportion, shapes and position in the room show a scale model of today's area. The peripheral video, instead, works on the concept of ''proximity'' showing how close the allotments are to the active volcanos and how the volcanos themselves influenced the surrounding environment. The Phlegraean Fields have the highest population density on top of an active volcano where almost 200 thousand people live, divided into 5 different Municipalities. Within a less than 5 km radius, the environment changes drastically and it goes from a very fertile and green hill to a lunar and hostile environment. At last, the soundscape realised together with Francesco Addati is the combination of field recording of the volcanos together with harmonic sections designed to bring together the whole site-specific installation and help the viewer dive into this immersive project. Design has become a true form of contemporary language, breaking down the barriers between architecture and art, and straddling the two disciplines.&nbsp;&nbsp;Designers now approach traditional production techniques by readapting them to a contemporary aesthetic and at the same time enriching them with an experimental vision, thus transforming them into tools for innovation.&nbsp;The re-appropriation of these classic production processes has formed a discipline in which ancient crafts are reinterpreted and adapted by contemporary designers to modern socio-economic dynamics.&nbsp;&nbsp; “Dissonant Classicism “ is a performance project that stems from breaking down the value traditional techniques have within the world of the arts, both applied and plastic, in the current production of a design piece.&nbsp;&nbsp;Having been invited to the Athens Design Forum, we took as a study case one of the most exploited examples in contemporary Greece, the Classical Ancient Temple, focusing in particular on the Zeus Temple of Athens, located approximately 500m south-east of the Acropolis. After a very concise visual research, we decided on four objects to reproduce during our performance.&nbsp; This first step called&nbsp;''the Extraction," consisted of selecting a series of objects from the Temples and decontextualising them, repositioning them in a new and unfit environment, an Industrial Archeology that was also the location of the performance itself. The second step concerned the choice of craftsmanship. We needed a craft that belonged both to Ancient Greece and to our practice and that could be used during the performance.&nbsp; Stucco is a technique used for covering pillars and walls in Greek Temples and it was perfect for our needs.&nbsp;&nbsp;We adapted the technique using it in a personal way; the "stucco" is no longer plaster, and the base is no longer stone walls, but contemporary materials, such as polystyrene as a base, a resin-based plaster mixed with local sand as covering materials. The action of producing these pieces live, being able to interact with viewers while working,&nbsp;is the fundamental aspect of this project.&nbsp; A&nbsp;way to bring the making-off closer to the people while investigating new production processes.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;"Dissonant Classicism" is concerned with the conceptualisation of an object and the action of creating; it is about&nbsp;the performance, not the final form achieved. In this way, old and new techniques are fused with different visions and aesthetic needs, material studies and possible applications, reflecting not only on functionality but also questioning the aesthetic values and perceptive standards regarding the production of an object.&nbsp;&nbsp; A working methodology that goes beyond the products, and opens up space for a discipline that aims to encapsulate its context.
